To ask the Minister of Education to detail any engagement his Department had with pupils of Dunluce School, Bushmills, before the decision was made to establish Causeway Academy over three campuses.

Once a Development Proposal (DP) is approved it becomes a statutory obligation for the proposer, in this case the Education Authority (EA), to proceed with its implementation.

The decision of Causeway Academy to operate over three campuses from September 2026 was discussed at length by the Interim Board of Governors working with the Principal Designate and EA. In taking forward the operation of Causeway Academy on the Bushmills, Carthall and Cloyfin Campuses, educational and pastoral considerations were considered.

School assemblies were held with students across all three legacy campuses, including Dunluce School, to ensure that students are fully informed about the phased transition. In addition, a structured ‘student voice’ exercise has been completed, enabling students from Dunluce School to share views on the supports, activities and information they feel they need during the transition period.

Key findings from this engagement include:

Strong pupil identity, with students expressing both pride in their current school environment and curiosity about Causeway Academy.

The importance of continuity, particularly for pupils entering Key Stage 4 in September 2026 who will complete their studies on-site.

A desire for enhanced transition activities, including opportunities to meet future Causeway Academy peers, explore the Carthall Campus, and understand new routines and expectations.

The need for ongoing communication, through regular assemblies, updates to families, and opportunities for pupils to raise concerns as the amalgamation progresses.

Informed by this engagement, a transition plan for pupils who will remain at the Bushmills Campus (Dunluce School) was developed.
